Translated from Italian, campanelle means bellflowers, little bells, or hand bells. Campanelle are thin walled pasta twists that resemble a ballerina dancing. Hence they are referred to as ballerina pasta.
This is a short cone shaped pasta rolled with a hollow center and ruffled, flower petal like edges. In some Italian regions, campanelle is referred to as gigli pasta, Italian for "lillies." It is best served in salads, casseroles or with a thick sauce.
